ASIFA-Hollywood has released their nominations list for the 45th annual Annie Awards which will be held on Saturday 3rd February 2018, at Royce Hall at UCLA in Los Angeles. The Annie Awards is an annual awards ceremony to honor exceptional animated productions and also honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the art of animation, an Annie Award is a highly regarded accolade for excellence in the field of animation.

Cartoon Network Studios’ We Bare Bears has been nominated in the “Best Animated Television/Broadcast Production For Children” category for the episode “Panda’s Art”, meanwhile Adult Swim has received three nominations in the same category for “Best General Audience Animated Television/Broadcast Production”, in the category, Rick and Morty has been nominated for the “Pickle Rick” episode, this year’s Robot Chicken Christmas special – “Freshly Baked: The Robot Chicken Santa Claus Pot Cookie Freakout Special: Special Edition” has also been nominated. The second episode of the final season of Samurai Jack “XCIII” has also been put forward for the award.

In terms of individual achievement award nominations, Cartoon Network has received two nominations, one for The Amazing World of Gumball and the other for The Powerpuff Girls. The voice of Gumball in The Amazing World of Gumball (from the end of The Copycats episode to present day) – Nicolas Cantu has been nominated for “Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production” for the episode “The Grades”. The Powerpuff Girls also receives a individual achievement nomination in the “Outstanding Achievement for Music in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production” category for the episode “Home, Sweet Homesick”, music in the episode was composed by Mike Reagan with lyrics by Bob Boyle.

Adult Swim’s and Cartoon Network Studios’ Samurai Jack has been nominated for three individual achievement awards, Craig Kellman has been nominated in the “Outstanding Achievement for Character Design in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production” category for his work on episode “XCVI”, Scott Wills has been nominated in the “Outstanding Achievement for Production Design in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production” category for episode “XCIII” and Paul Douglas has been nominated in the “Outstanding Achievement for Editorial in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production” category for episodes “XCIII”, “XCIV” and “XCIX”.

Rick and Morty episode writers Ryan Ridley and Dan Guterman have been nominated in the “Outstanding Achievement for Writing in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production” category for the episode “The Ricklantis Mixup”.

Warner Animation Group’s (owned by Turner’s sister company Warner Bros.) The Lego Batman Movie, has been nominated for three personal awards, the movie’s director – Chris McKay has been nominated for “Outstanding Achievement for Directing in an Animated Feature Production”, the voice of the Joker – Zach Galifianakis has been nominated for “Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production”. David Burrows, Matt Villa and John Venzon have also been nominated in the “Outstanding Achievement for Editorial in an Animated Feature Production” category.

TruTV Asia Samurai Jack Season 5 Premieres 2nd June

TruTV Asia will premiere season 5 of Samurai Jack on Friday 2nd June, with new episodes airing every Friday at 11.45pm Singapore Time/10.45pm Jakarta Time. The events in season five take place fifty years after the events of season 4. With all the known time portals destroyed, Jack is stuck in the future and has lost all hope of trying to get back to his own time, Jack eventually forms an unlikely alliance with a former enemy, finds his sword and prepares to defeat Aku – the shapeshifting master of darkness for one final time.

Samurai Jack season 5 is produced by Cartoon Network Studios and Williams Street for Adult Swim. The show’s creator, Genndy Tartakovsky returned to Cartoon Network Studios to write and direct the final season. Season five has a mature tone compared to the previous child-friendly seasons that aired on Cartoon Network.

Toonami Asia promoted the new season on their Twitter account, Samurai Jack season five would have been a good fit for Toonami Asia, but international versions of Toonami are more suited to younger audiences compared to the American programming block of the same name, so instead, its airing on TruTV Asia which is also owned by Toonami’s owners – Turner. In the UK and Ireland, Samurai Jack airs on FOX’s Adult Swim block every Thursday night at midnight (less than a week after the U.S. premiere) and in Latin America, Samurai Jack premiered on Turner-owned I.Sat this month.

The final episode of Samurai Jack will premiere on Adult Swim USA’s Toonami programming block this Saturday at 11pm ET/PT, the penultimate episode will air on FOX UK tomorrow night (18/05/2017) at midnight (technically Friday morning at 12am).

This week (03/04/2017 – 06/04/2017) was the MIPTV (Marché International des Programmes de Télévision, English: Television Programmes International Market) convention in Cannes, France, a major event in the television content market calendar. The MIPTV convention is an opportunity for broadcasters and content creators to promote their shows and to potentially sell broadcast rights to broadcasters.

Turner (owners of Cartoon Network and Boomerang) was present at the convention; promoting their programming for children and for general audiences, including productions from TNT and TBS in the United States as well as Cartoon Network Studios and Williams Street (Adult Swim). Two Cartoon Network Studios productions, in particular, have generated a lot of interest – The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10. So far, rights for The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 have been picked by British children’s free-to-air channel, CITV, Gulli in France and Stan, a SVOD (Subscription Video on-demand) service in Australia. Disney Channel Germany and TV5 in the Philippines have purchased rights to air the new Powerpuff Girls series, while GMA in the Philippines has picked up the the rights to air Ben 10.

Other promoted programming from Cartoon Network other than The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 include Mighty Magiswords, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, We Bare Bears and also Boomerang’s original series – The Happos Family. Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken and Samurai Jack were also promoted.

MIPTV also has a sister convention that runs in October called MIPCOM. MIPCOM has a side event called MIPJunior which is a major international children’s media industry convention.

Turner has today revealed details of key shows from its extensive programming line-up to have been sold across international markets, as well as the strong slate of new and returning series that it will present at MIPTV 2017.

Following its recent surge in original content for TNT and TBS, TNT drama Good Behavior has been picked up by OCS (France), Telecom Italia (Italy), Fox (Finland), Cellcom and HOT (Israel), Stan (Australia), and NEON and SKY (New Zealand). The show is now available to audiences in more than 20 markets worldwide. Added to this, new TBS comedy Search Party has been sold to All4 (UK), OCS (France) and Cellcom (Israel), with other deals on the horizon. Both shows have been renewed for a second season.

From its kids’ portfolio, Cartoon Network’s two 2016 franchise revivals The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 are also generating significant interest from international buyers. To date, both shows have been snapped up by CITV (UK), Gulli (France) and Stan (Australia), while Disney Channel (Germany) and TV5 (Philippines) have picked up The Powerpuff Girls and GMA (Philippines) has picked up Ben 10.

Alongside these, Turner is also bringing a varied and exciting set of programming to MIPTV. This includes: new dramas 4 Blocks (from TNT Serie in Germany) and Will (TNT), the former having recently premiered at the prestigious Berlinale Film Festival and lined up for screenings at MIPTV (presented by series creator Quirin Berg) and Series Mania in France; new comedies I’m Sorry and Those Who Can’t (both truTV); Adult Swim’s hit animated series Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken and Samurai Jack; and kids’ series Mighty Magiswords, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, We Bare Bears (all Cartoon Network) and first Boomerang Original The Happos Family.
