Steven Universe Wins GLAAD Award For Outstanding Kids And Family Programming
On Thursday (28th March) was the first round of the 2019 GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.
At the awards, Steven Universe became the first animated show to win a GLAAD Award in the “Outstanding Kids And Family Programming” category.
The GLAAD Media Awards celebrates the best of television and film with character representation from the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) community. In 2018, Steven Universe was nominated in the same category (the first year the category was introduced) but was unsuccessful.
In the same category, Steven Universe had beaten Cartoon Network’s other show nomination – Adventure Time and also Disney Channel’s Andi Mack and two Netflix shows She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Anne with an E.
In Steven Universe, same-sex relationships is a running theme, especially the relationship and marriage between Ruby and Sapphire (the two gems that forms Garnet), which was also the first same-sex marriage on mainstream children’s television.
Congratulations to Steven Universe’s Rebecca Sugar and the Crewniverse (Steven Universe’s production crew) for winning the award!
