Turner Northern Europe Senior Vice President Pierre Branco Adds Middle East Responsibilities

Today (5th February), Turner Broadcasting System Europe has announced that they’ve restructured their regional management, Pierre Branco – the Senior Vice President of Turner Northern Europe (UK and Nordics) will have additional responsiblities over the MENAT (Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, also includes Cyprus and Greece) region from 1st April. In addition to Turner’s channels and services in the UK and Scandinavia such as Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Cartoonito and the Toonix streaming service, Pierre will also have responsibility over Turner’s channels in the MENAT region which will include channels such as Cartoon Network MENA, Boomerang MENA, Cartoon Network Turkey, Boomerang Turkey, TCM MENA and the distribution of CNN International in the region. He will continue to report to Turner EMEA’s president Giorgio Stock.

In a statement about Pierre’s new additional responsibilities, Giorgio Stock said: “Pierre’s ability to bring fresh impetus and new thinking to our business has been proven across hugely diverse markets. Together with our talented regional management team, he will now help further our vision for Turner in MENAT to deliver outstanding branded destinations to our fans across the region.”

Pierre became SVP of Turner Northern Europe in 2017, before 2017, he was general manager of Turner France, Portugal and Africa. Pierre Branco replaces Tarek Mounir, who worked for Turner’s MENAT operations for eight years as commercial director and then general manager, during his time he launched localised premium versions of Cartoon Network and Boomerang for the MENA region replacing distribution of Cartoon Network Africa and Boomerang Africa in the region. He also developed a local content strategy including the animated show Mansour, he had a role in establishing Cartoon Network Studios Arabia and was also involved in the Cartoon Network Zone theme park deal with IMG Worlds of Adventure. Tarek will now be working for music streaming service – Deezer from April.

Yesterday (26/09/2017), Cartoon Network MENA (Middle East and North Africa) held their annual licensing day at Park Hyatt in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. At the event, Cartoon Network Enterprises announced their product, service and franchising licensing plans for 2018.

Licensees and retailers from all across the region attended the event which had many of the new products on display. Attendees were also taken through an interactive tour for several Cartoon Network IPs including Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, the locally produced animated series – Mansour (which now has franchising status) and many others. At the event, retailers were presented with toolkits on how to utilise Cartoon Network’s franchises which includes everything from AR (Augmented Reality) to entertainment shows.

In a statement about the licensing event, Ali El-Hagar, Licensing Director for Cartoon Network MENA & Turkey, said:

“We want to focus on simple growth pillars starting from franchise management. Earlier, we were in the launch phase. We now want to concentrate on the building and sustaining phases. We will work towards regional expansion adapting to local preferences aimed at driving deep engagement with shoppers and Cartoon Network audiences across the region.”


In other product licensing news, Concept One in the United States will be manufacturing a series of We Bare Bears themed clothing accessories and for Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty. For the UK market, Poetic Brands will be manufacturing a portfolio of Rick and Morty nightwear.

Yahlive, a Abu Dhabi based satellite broadcasting company has announced today (02/07/2017) that they will carry Cartoon Network Arabic on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) beam on its Yahsat 1A satellite. Yahlive already has an existing deal with Turner Broadcasting System Europe to carry CNN International on its satellite service. Yahlive used to carry a short-lived high-definition feed of Cartoon Network Arabic on its satellite service in the Middle East, the HD version of the channel launched in 2012 and has since closed.


All channels on Yahsat 1A are free-to-air and the new deal will extend coverage of Cartoon Network Arabic to new audiences. Viewers who use the Yahlive service will now get to enjoy episodes of Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, the Cartoon Network Studios Arabia animated production – Mansour and many more.

Regarding the deal with Turner, Sami Boustany, Yahlive chief executive officer said

Currently our viewers can enjoy a diverse mix of channels such as France 24, Abu Dhabi TV, Canal Sport, Face TV, Nay TV and Fashion One 4K on Yahlive. We have also added over 50 TV channels to our offerings this year and we are working closely with regional broadcasters to ensure that our audience have access to their preferred, popular channels”
