Two New Seasons Of FLCL: FLCL Progressive And FLCL Alternative Coming Soon To Adult Swim USA: It Takes An Idiot To Do Cool Things, And That’s Why It’s Cool

Adult Swim USA’s anime block – Toonami has released a trailer for two new seasons of the crazy comedy sci-fi anime – FLCL (“Fooly Cooly”) entitled “Progressive” and “Alternative”. FLCL Progressive will air in June and FLCL Alternative will air in September. FLCL originally came out in 2000 as a short-run anime series of six episodes, the original series was a coming-of-age story about a young boy named Naota, whose life suddenly changes after he gets run over by a wacky pink-haired Vespa scooter-riding humanoid alien woman named Haruko. Naota’s head concussion which was caused by the accident has opened a portal on his head, causing robots to come out. Haruko works for the Galactic Space Police Brotherhood and is looking for the Pirate King, meanwhile Naota is being spied on by Commander Amarao from the Bureau of Interstellar Immigration.

According to the trailer, Haruko has continued her journey to another town where she meets a whole bunch of new characters (including two new main characters – Hidomi in “Progressive” and Kana in “Alternative”), as briefly shown at the end of the trailer, there’s going to be more robots and aliens too. The animation studio who worked on the original series – Production I.G has returned to animate the two new seasons, with Adult Swim co-producing. The original FLCL series has aired on Adult Swim USA numerous times since 2003. Japanese rock band – The Pillows have returned to produce music for the two new seasons and Kari Wahlgren (voice for Dorothy in Dorothy and the Wizard Of Oz, Shannon in OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes and Mina in Bunnicula) has reprised her voice acting role as Haruko in the English language version. The two new seasons will have six episodes each.

FLCL: Progressive and FLCL: Alternative Descriptions from the Adult Swim press release:

FLCL: Progressive tells the story of 14-year-old Hidomi, her classmate Ide, and two otherworldly beings, “Jinyu” and “Haruha Raharu,” who are determined to unlock their hidden potential. Mixed up in this is an all-powerful force known as “ATOMSK,” a gorgeous vintage car… and a certain Vespa Scooter”.

FLCL: Alternative, which hands the series over to a totally different team of young creators who will redefine the meaning of “sequel.” The series centers on the misadventures of 17-year-old Kana, a high school junior who spends her days hanging out with her besties, Mossan, Hijiri, and Pets. They live unremarkable lives, until the day a Mecha falls out of the sky, along with a strange woman named “Haruko.” Her plans for Kana and her friends involve the force known as “ATOMSK.” Kana will have to risk everything to decide whether or not to help… like she really has a choice!

On 6th April at C2E2 2018 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo), there will be a special FLCL panel about the two new seasons, joining the panel are Jason DeMarco (co-creator of Toonami and Creative Director for Adult Swim On-Air), Kari Wahlgren as well as Mitsuhisa Ishikawa and Maki Terashima-Furuta from Production I.G. During the panel, there will also a be a sneak preview for FLCL: Progressive and FLCL: Alternative.
