Adult Swim And Anime Streaming Service Crunchyroll Announce Partnership

Today (12th March) Cartoon Network USA’s nightly young adult programming service – Adult Swim and Ellation’s Crunchyroll have announced that they have announced a programming partnership for Adult Swim’s Japanese anime block – Toonami which airs on Saturday nights. From now on, both Crunchyroll and Adult Swim will work together on licensed content, co-productions and distribution opportunities. The news of the partnership follows the announcement of a corporate reshuffle at WarnerMedia last week which led to the break up of Cartoon Network’s owners – Turner, causing CN, Boomerang and Adult Swim to move to Warner Bros’s brand new Global Kids and Young Adults division. Meanwhile, Ellation (Crunchyroll’s owners) was also transferred to Warner Bros. At present, Turner is still a going concern until the complex process of restructuring at WarnerMedia is completed.

Crunchyroll was founded in 2006 and WarnerMedia inherited the streaming service through its merger with telecommunications company AT&T, last August, AT&T fully acquired Otter Media, the owners of Ellation, which itself owns Crunchyroll.

Ever since the Time Warner/AT&T merger, Adult Swim and Crunchyroll have worked together and even announced a new anime series called Blade Runner – Black Lotus based on the Oscar-winning movie Blade Runner 2049, which is co-produced by Alcon Television Group. The English-dubbed episodes will premiere on Toonami in the United States and Crunchyroll will handle worldwide streaming. Crunchyroll and Adult Swim have also collaborated to distribute the anime series – Mob Psycho 100, which premiered on the Toonami programming block last year.

Jason DeMarco, senior vice president, creative director for on-air at Adult Swim and co-creator of Toonami, made this statement in regards of the new partnership with Crunchyroll:

“Our partnership with Crunchyroll will open up exciting new possibilities for both of us. This will expand Toonami’s already great programming to include even more premiere and original anime. It’s a great time to be an anime fan!”

Crunchyroll’s general manager – Joanne Waage also added:

“Our mission is to grow anime globally, which makes Adult Swim the perfect partner as Toonami has been incredibly influential in the growth of anime here in the U.S. We can’t wait to show our fans what we have in store for them through this new programming partnership. Expect new co-productions, expanded distribution of dubs, and generally more accessible anime!”
