The Amazing World Of Gumball Pays Tribute To Fans In The Shippening Episode: Ship On Sweet Electronic Creatures
Cartoon Network USA premiered a brand new The Amazing World of Gumball episode like no other last Friday (20/04/2018), the episode is called “The Shippening”, in the episode, Sarah finds a notebook which can manifest anything simply by writing, the magical notebook came from The Awesome Store – a van filled with magical items. Unfortunately, she uses the book to write several bizarre love stories throughout Elmore. The love stories and character designs shown in the episode are based upon real fan art and fan fiction on the internet, especially on the DeviantArt website and FanFiction.net. The episode is essentially an affectionate parody of the (crazy) creative work produced by Gumball fans. Back in November 2016, the show’s creator – Ben Bocquelet did some research and asked fans on Twitter on which characters in Gumball they would “ship” together.
The episode’s title “The Shippening” comes from the word “shipping” or “ship”, which actually in this context has nothing to do with boats but refers to the desire by fans for two (or sometimes more) characters to be in a relationship, which is often a theme in fan fiction and fan art. The fan art OCs (or Original Characters), Zachariah and Bexi in the episode are based off the fan art characters Zack Silvia by Zack30 and Sklyn by Mielyn Johnson, both from DeviantArt. The Zack Silvia OC was remastered and reuploaded onto DeviantArt by Philip Miguel Garcia (aka Miggy), as the original version was taken down. An adult version of Gumball and Carrie seen together in the episode are based off a series of fan art by Jonathan Elrod.
In the episode, Darwin references the names “Carwin” and “Carball”, “Carwin” is the ship between Carrie and Darwin and “Carball” is the ship between Carrie and Gumball. There’s a “Gumwin” (though not referred to as such) ship between Gumball and Darwin, in this case, Gumball is female. The episode is well and truly fan service, and is a nice and funny tribute to fans before the show bows out at the end of season six.

I can’t believe that Gumball show one of my Gumball OCs in the recent episode, The Shippening. I will show a screenshot of it later but here’s the OC they showed. pic.twitter.com/xJAgDQ4Ump
