Cartoon Network MENA (Middle East and North Africa) is now working with du’s Young Programmers initiative. The Young Programmers initiative is similar to Cartoon Network USA’s STEAM initiative which mostly focuses on art, storywriting and programming using the Scratch Programming Language. Cartoon Network MENA has provided the initiative with graphical assets including character designs of The Powerpuff Girls (Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup), using these assets, participants are able to make their own Powerpuff Girls themed mini-game. The Young Programmers platform is available online in Arabic and English. Last year, a total of 464,898 children participated in du’s initiative. du is a telecommunications provider operating in the United Arab Emirates, Cartoon Network MENA is also distributed on du’s IPTV service.

Samer Geissah, du’s vice president of innovation is pleased that they have partnered with Cartoon Network MENA to launch an interactive online tool to teach young people the basics of programming, which might lead to participants to consider software development as a career choice:

“Contributing to educational programs is a big part of du’s initiative to help the youth realise their greatest potential. We are pleased to have recently launched a platform with Cartoon Network Arabic, to offer our youth an interactive and fun online tool to learn coding through the Young Programmers campaign. We hope that this can be the start for many of the youth to learn coding and gain an interest to study it more on a professional level.”

Tarek Mounir, vice president and general manager of Turner for Turkey, Middle East, North Africa, Greece & Cyprus also commented:

“More and more, coding is becoming the ‘new universal language’ and playing a major role in shaping today’s kids. In the UAE, the discussion to introduce coding as an additional subject for primary school students has been gaining traction as the country’s vision to build a knowledge-based economy and drive innovation sits high on its agenda. The introduction of coding at an early age not only helps to encourage innovation in the advancement of technology but also creates a new generation of highly-skilled progressive thinkers.”–1187613

From The Turner MENA Press Release:

With the growing demand for tailored content and the lack of a dedicated kids platform that caters to the large South Asian demographic, Turner, a division of Time Warner and parent company of Cartoon Network Arabic, has successfully launched its fourth flagship kids channel, Cartoon Network Hindi.

The channel is aimed at entertaining the significant number of children between the ages of 4 to 14 from the sub-continent residing in the region. Available in Hindi only, the new channel will include a line-up of popular Cartoon Network originals from Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time and many more in addition to popular Indian produced cartoon series that are also airing on Turner Channels in India.

“The launch of Cartoon Network Hindi continues to build on our popularity and position as one of the leading dedicated kids’ channels in MENA. It will be the first international cartoon channel available in Hindi throughout the region and we are proud to see it move into this newly developed chapter” said Tarek Mounir, Vice President and General Manager Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, Greece & Cyprus at Turner.

Taking into consideration the percentage of South Asian families residing in the UAE and other GCC countries, Turner will be the first broadcaster in the region to cater for this untapped kids market. Cartoon Network Hindi will be available as a pay TV channel on beIN (as Turner’s exclusive Direct to Home partner) and on E-Vision part of Etisalat and du in the UAE. As a testament to the importance of launching such a dedicated channel, New Boy – a prominent toy manufacturer and distributor – has also come on board as a key advertising partner.

Turner is now the only broadcasting network in MENA to offer dedicated kids channels in three different languages Arabic (through its free to air Cartoon Network Arabic), English (through Cartoon Network and Boomerang) and Hindi (through Cartoon Network Hindi). The addition of Cartoon Network Hindi is a part of Turner’s continued growth platform planned for the region.
