Cartoon Network 25 Years Of Drawing On Creativity Exhibit Opens September
On 1st October 2017, Cartoon Network USA will reach a significant milestone in the history of art, pop culture and broadcasting, on this date, the world’s first television channel that’s 100% devoted to cartoons will celebrate its 25th Anniversary and The Paley Center for Media in New York and Los Angeles will be running a free public exhibition to celebrate the channel’s history and the much beloved animated shows it has produced.
The special exhibition will be open from 16th September until 8th October at The Paley Center for Media in New York and will be open Wednesdays to Sundays 12pm to 6pm, open Thursday nights until 8pm, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. For Cartoon Network fans on the west coast of the United States, there will also be an exhibition at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles from 14th October to 19th November.
During the exhibition – Cartoon Network: 25 Years of Drawing on Creativity, visitors will experience the cartoon creation process from sketches all the way to the screen with an in-depth look at one of Cartoon Network’s biggest hits in recent years – Steven Universe. At the exhibition, there will also be stop motion sets from Adventure Time, sculptures of The Powerpuff Girls and an exhibit for Cartoon Network Studios’ latest show – OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes.
Also on weekends throughout the duration of the exhibition (from Saturday 16th September to Sunday 8th October), there’s a one-hour screening of episodes from Cartoon Network’s animation library including Ben 10, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, and The Powerpuff Girls. In addition, there will also be a one-hour screening focusing entirely on Steven Universe, this includes episodes, behind-the-scenes clips, music videos and other special content.
On the first day of the exhibition – Saturday 16th September, The Paley Center in New York will be running an animation activity session for kids. The session will be an opportunity for kids to try out some simple animation techniques and it will be an insight on how some of their favourite animated shows are made. Children aged between 5 and 7 years old will learn about storyboarding, this will give kids the chance to draw their favourite characters and to use their creativity and imagination to draw a storyboard. Children aged between 8 and 15 years old will be given the opportunity to produce simple animations using Flip Books, Thaumatropes, and Phenakistoscopes.

Free Drop-In Animation Activities for Kids
Saturday 16th September 2017, noon to 3.30pm
You be the animator! Through arts and crafts projects with the Paley Educators, children (ages 5-15) and families will have the opportunity to try out simple animation techniques and gain a better understanding of process behind some of their most beloved Cartoon Network programs.
Storyboarding (ages 5-7)
Using blank storyboard templates, children will be able to map out a scene of their own design. This activity will give children a chance to try their hand at drawing their favorite Cartoon Network characters and then using their creativity, imagination, and literacy skills to fill in the dialogue and action boxes for a complete scene.
Flip Books, Thaumatropes, and Phenakistoscopes (ages 8-15)
One of the best ways of understanding how animation comes to life is to do it yourself. Children will be given the opportunity to create their own simple animation toys like flip books, thaumatropes, and phenakistoscopes that show how small changes over multiple images make for exciting results!
