Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe Wins Children’s And Youth Peabody Award

Today (18th April), the Peabody Awards has announced the winner of the Children’s and Youth category and has announced Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe as the winner! The Peabody Awards recognises distinguished and meritorious content by American radio and television stations, networks, online media, producing organisations, and individuals, only content of such an extraordinary high standard can win such an award. The Peabody Awards is presented by University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. In the same category, Steven Universe had to compete against Netflix’s and Silvergate Media’s critically-acclaimed animated series Hilda.

The Peabody Awards made the following statement on why they chose Steven Universe as this year’s Children’s and Youth winner:

“On its surface, Rebecca Sugar’s animated series develops a complex mythology centering around the Crystal Gems — “polymorphic sentient rocks” who protect young Steven and his human friends from cosmic threats. But in this earnest fantasy epic and superhero saga, empathy is perhaps the most important superpower, something our real-world human society needs now more than ever.”

Congratulations to Rebecca Sugar and the Crewniverse for winning the Children’s And Youth Peabody Award, the 78th Annual Peabody Awards ceremony will be held on Saturday 18th May at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York.
