Cartoon Network USA 1st October 1992 Launch Video Now Online: The Moment When It All Began

On Tuesday this week (24th July), YouTube user Gustavo Aguilera uploaded the first few minutes of Cartoon Network USA’s launch on 1st October 1992. Luckily, the YouTuber recorded the moment when the channel launched on VHS, he recently rediscovered the tape and uploaded the channel’s launch for the world to see. Since the channel’s launch in 1992, the channel and brand has expanded to all four corners of the Earth and became one of the most influential sources of children’s entertainment and a haven for animation lovers everywhere. The footage is a piece of television history, it was the world’s first channel dedicated to cartoons and the fact that the channel celebrated its 25th anniversary last October.

The footage has also cleared up a couple misconceptions about the launch. Contrary to common belief, the channel didn’t launch with the national anthem of the United States – “The Star-Spangled Banner”, the first song to air on the channel was in fact the infamous finale to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture which was played along with a backdrop of cartoon explosions. The first animated short to air was in fact Merrie Melodies’ “Rhapsody Rabbit” and not Looney Tunes’ “The Great Piggy Bank Robbery”, however what was true, is that the channel did launch with a short preview and introduction called “Droopy’s Guide To The Cartoon Network”.

Cartoon Network USA’s launch, the picture quality isn’t great, but it’s to be expected with VHS recordings, especially with a recording this old, also these were the days before Digital TV even existed, but just the fact that the launch was recorded in the first place is astounding:

Special thanks to Gustavo Aguilera for recording and preserving the first few moments of Cartoon Network!
